How to do it

  1. Stand sideways to a cable machine with your feet shoulder-width apart. Attach a handle to a mid-pulley and grasp it with both hands. Bend your arms at 90 degrees and keep your elbows close to your torso sides.
  2. Engage your core and keep your arms stationary as you twist your torso away from the machine, pulling the handle across your body.
  3. Twist until your shoulders are turned 90 degrees from the machine, feeling the stretch in your oblique muscles.
  4. Slowly return to the starting position with control, keeping your arms straight. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch sides.

Form tips

  • Use your oblique muscles to twist, not your arms, hips, or legs.
  • Keep your feet planted firmly on the floor.
  • Adjust the cable machine weight to a challenging but manageable level.
